Collectors Comment: Emissione 15/04/1941 Come si comprende facilmente dall'assonanza, questa nazione nordafricana prende il nome dalla sua capitale Algeri, città fondata dai Berberi sulle rovine di una città romana; questa città vede la presenza nelle sue acque antistanti di alcuni grossi scogli da cui il nome. La storia dell'Algeria fu, fin dall'antichità, fortemente legata alle vicende dell'area del Mediterraneo. Controllata in successione da Numidi, Fenici, Cartaginesi, Romani, Vandali, Bizantini e varie dinastie berbere, la regione divenne parte dell'impero ottomano, per entrare poi nei domini francesi durante il colonialismo. Come per molti altri Stati, l'indipendenza (ottenuta nel 1962) fu seguita da un lungo periodo di instabilità politica durante gli anni Novanta del secolo scorso, che al giorno d'oggi ha trovato una sua stabilità.
