Fiji 7 Dollars (Commemorative Paper Money)
« on: May 17, 2017, 01:29:11 AM »
Fiji has a new commemorative banknote, celebrating their "Rugby 7's Gold Olympians".  Its an interesting banknote that may appeal to more than just rugby fans.  The front of the banknote features a rugby player running with a ball, with the Fijian flag in the background.  An interesting part of the design on the front is the man sitting on the bottom left of this vertical design.  The back of this banknote features the Fijian team.

Being a pretty big rugby fan, I bid on a few of these.  They are massively overpriced, when compared to their actual legal tender value, but hopefully these will pay off in the long run (in terms of investment).

Good looking note.

Don't buy any more for a while!

There's some Polish commemorative notes, too, they should do well.

I think you're looking at such notes from the right perspective.  Design, appearance, cross-cultural appeal.

Don't buy any more for a while?  Why is that?

Right now, it's a bubble note.  Either the bubble breaks, which is the more likely conclusion, or the price just keeps on going up, like the Zimbabwean $100 Trillion note.

I declined to buy a bundle of the Zimbabwean note for $349.  So now I am cursed with 'what if' decisions when new and neat notes come out.  My response is 'wait and see', then move, maybe.

I suspect the Fijian note won't keep going up too much, and may even come down in value.  Rugby, and even more specifically Fijian 7-aside rugby, is quite a niche target market.  I also imagine that rugby is of little consequence to the type of individuals that collect paper money, though I admit the range of interests is probably quite large.  However, because I played rugby and have a love of the sport, I've decided to buy a few of these.  They are appealing, have a funky denomination, and, if nothing else, I will have one or two to give away to my rugby buddies.

I think that the only way this note will be worth a lot is if its a tiny run, but I suspect that, considering Fiji's size, it will be small but not tiny.

I'm thinking the print run is maybe 10,000 to 100,000 notes, small enough to keep the price up, and large enough to make some coin for the Fijian government and island vendors.  Can't really see from the Ebay scan if there'd 5 or 6 digits.
